Although the Sonoran Desert Toad may be kept as an unusual pet, the main reason why most people keep a Bufo Alvarius toad is because of its powerful venom. The venom contains 5-MeO-DMT and bufotenin which produce hallucinogenic effects when smoked. It is likely that ancient people, especially shamans or medicine men in the Sonoran Desert area knew of the toad and its psychoactive venom. Perhaps they used it to help them go into trances to have visions of the spirit world.

Despite the fact that much of the traditional information of ancient, indigenous people has been lost or repressed by modern society and its laws, at least some of the advocates of the Colorado River Toad feel that, by partaking of its mystical power, they can become closer to not only ancient knowledge but also to the unseen world of spirits. It is believed that these Bufo Alvarius supporters are gratified to know that, at least for the time being, there are no current federal laws or legislations that prohibit the sale or distribution of these hallucinogenic toads.

Bufo Alvarius toad fanciers should not handle them too much, but whenever they do touch their toad, they are advised to wash their hands thoroughly immediately afterwards, because of the toxic venom in their skin.

Detailed care information is available from Bouncing Bear Botanicals, a recommended source from whom to buy Bufo Alvarius toads.
